How to Choose Drone Protection Net for Oilfield Sites
Why Oilfield and Gas Facilities Need a Drone Protection Net
Unmanned aircraft are increasingly used near critical infrastructure, and that creates real security and safety risks. A drone protection net is one of the most cost-effective ways to shield oilfields, gas storage tanks, refineries, grain warehouses and power substations from accidental or deliberate drone intrusion. Unlike electronic jammers, a physical anti-drone net needs no radio permission, works day and night, and stops the drone before it reaches the protected area. This guide explains how to choose the right drone defense netting for your site, based on material, mesh size, height, installation and budget.
How a Drone Protection Net Works
A drone protection net is installed above or around the protected zone as a physical barrier. When a multi-rotor drone hits the net, its rotors become tangled and it loses lift, so it falls inside or outside the covered area without reaching the asset. The net is designed to absorb the impact instead of deflecting it, which is exactly what makes it effective against small and medium drones weighing up to several kilograms.
Most sites use two configurations:
Horizontal canopy net: suspended over tanks, storage yards or pump stations to protect against drones dropping from above.
Vertical perimeter net: installed around the fence line or perimeter of the site to stop low-flying intruders.
Many customers combine both, using a canopy over the most sensitive area and vertical netting around the boundary.
Key Factors When Choosing a Drone Protection Net
Net Material
Most industrial anti-drone nets are made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or nylon. HDPE is lightweight, UV-stabilized, rot-proof and cheaper to ship, which makes it the first choice for large sites in the Middle East, Africa and Central Asia. Nylon nets are stronger and more tear-resistant, and suit permanent installations that must survive years of harsh weather.
Mesh Size
The mesh size controls how effectively the net catches a drone. For small and medium drones, a mesh of 50 mm to 100 mm is the practical range. Smaller mesh (around 50 mm) catches even the smallest multi-rotors and also blocks birds, but it is heavier and more expensive. Larger mesh (80-100 mm) is lighter and cheaper and still stops most common drones, because the rotors tangle in the mesh openings.
Rope Thickness and Knot Type
Look at the twine thickness and the knot structure. Industrial drone nets typically use 3-5 mm twine with double or triple knots that lock the mesh and stop it from sliding. Knotted nets hold their shape better than twisted or knotless nets under wind load and repeated drone strikes.
Coverage Height and Area
Decide the protected height first. A standard drone protection net for oilfield facilities is installed at 10 to 30 meters above the ground, depending on the tank height and the clearance needed for vehicles. The total area determines the quantity of net panels and the supporting cable or truss system. Always measure the tank diameter and the distance between anchor points before ordering, so the net can be manufactured in panels that match your layout.
UV Resistance and Service Life
For outdoor sites in strong sunlight, confirm that the net is UV-stabilized. A good UV-stabilized HDPE drone net keeps its strength for 5 to 8 years in outdoor service. Cheap non-stabilized nets become brittle within one or two seasons and are a false economy on a permanent facility.
MOQ, Packaging and Shipping
Typical MOQ for customized industrial drone protection nets is one complete set or a minimum area, but for standard panels a small trial order is usually acceptable. Nets are packed in rolls with poly woven bags or shrink wrap, and shipped by sea in containers or by air for urgent projects. Provide your site layout and required dimensions, and the factory can cut, edge and reinforce the panels to fit your anchors.
Applications: Oilfield, Gas Storage and Grain Facilities
Oilfield Drone Protection Net
Oilfield sites in the Middle East and North Africa order drone protection nets for wellheads, tank farms and crew camps. The netting protects against both security threats and accidental crashes that could ignite volatile vapors. For tank farms, a horizontal net over each tank plus perimeter netting around the battery limit is the standard solution.
Gas Storage and LPG Facilities
Gas storage, LPG and LNG facilities are the most sensitive applications. The net should be installed with fire-rated steel cables and anchor systems, and the mesh must be tight enough to stop a drone far from the storage vessels. Several of our clients in the Middle East have deployed anti-drone nets around gas metering stations and bullet tanks with good results.
Grain Warehouse and Food Storage
Grain silos, feed mills and food warehouses also use drone protection netting to prevent drones from dropping objects, taking samples or causing dust-related hazards. The same HDPE netting works well here and is much cheaper than full electronic counter-drone systems.
How to Install Anti-Drone Netting
Step 1: Survey the site
Map the protected area, mark the anchor points, and measure the distances between them. Decide whether you need horizontal, vertical, or combined coverage.
Step 2: Choose the support system
For small areas, steel poles with guy wires are enough. For large tanks, use a perimeter cable or truss system with anchor posts set outside the danger zone.
Step 3: Hang and tension the net
Attach the net panels to the cables with stainless steel shackles or UV-resistant zip ties. Pull the panels tight so there is no sagging gap that a drone could pass through. Overlap adjacent panels by at least 50 cm and join them with the supplied connectors.
Step 4: Test and maintain
Inspect the net after installation and check the tension at each anchor. Re-tighten after the first strong wind event, and inspect the mesh for tears every season. UV-stabilized nets normally need no coating or treatment.
FAQ
Q: Can a drone protection net stop a large industrial drone?
The net is sized for small and medium multi-rotor drones, which cover almost all unauthorized intrusion cases. For very large fixed-wing drones, combine netting with radar and electronic detection, or use a heavier reinforced net.
Q: What mesh size should I choose?
50 mm for maximum protection including small drones and birds, or 80-100 mm for a lighter and cheaper net that still stops most common drones.
Q: Is HDPE or nylon better for an anti-drone net?
HDPE is lighter, cheaper and UV-stabilized, ideal for most oilfield and storage sites. Nylon is stronger and better for permanent installations in extreme conditions.
Q: Can the net be manufactured to my site dimensions?
Yes. Send your layout and anchor distances, and the panels are custom cut, edged and reinforced to match. MOQ depends on the configuration.
Q: How long does the net last outdoors?
A UV-stabilized HDPE net typically lasts 5 to 8 years in outdoor service, depending on sunlight and wind conditions.
