FAQ: T Post or Y Post – Which Fence Post Should I Buy?

2026-10-25 10:31:41 1

Fence posts are the backbone of any fence, and choosing between a T post and a Y post (star picket) is one of the most common questions from overseas buyers. Dutai Wire Mesh answers the practical questions farmers and contractors ask us every day about T post, Y post and star picket selection, quality and export.

Q1: What is the difference between a T post and a Y post?

The difference is the cross-section. A T post has a T-shaped profile with pre-punched studs for direct wire attachment, which makes it fast and economical for woven wire and barbed wire fences. A Y post (star picket) has a Y-shaped profile with three ribs, giving it higher rigidity per kilogram of steel — it resists bending better under heavy tension, strong winds and animal pressure. Choose Y posts for permanent, high-strain fencing; choose T posts for economical standard farm fencing.

Q2: Which galvanizing should I choose: hot-dip or electro?

For outdoor fencing we strongly recommend hot-dip galvanized posts. The zinc coating is 50–90 g/m2 or more depending on grade, giving 8–15 years of service life. Electro-galvanized posts are thinner-coated and better for indoor or short-term use. We can also supply PVC-coated posts in green, blue or black for a finished look.

Q3: What sizes do T posts and Y posts come in?

Popular lengths are 1.2m, 1.5m, 1.65m, 1.8m and 2.1m (4, 5, 6 and 7 feet). T post weight ranges from about 1.0kg to 2.0kg per piece; Y post weight from about 1.2kg to 2.2kg per piece depending on length and steel grade. Both can be supplied with a spade end or a foot plate, and custom lengths are available.

Q4: How far apart should fence posts be?

For standard farm fences, space posts 2.5–3m apart for woven wire and barbed wire. For high-tensile wire with droppers, posts can be spaced 5–10m apart. Always use heavier strainer posts at corners, gate ends and changes of direction, ideally set in concrete.

Q5: What is your MOQ for T post and Y post?

Our usual MOQ is one pallet for small orders or one 20ft container for export orders. We are happy to mix T posts, Y posts and other wire mesh products in one container to help you consolidate freight and save cost.

Q6: How are fence posts packed for export?

T posts and Y posts are bundled with steel strapping, wrapped in waterproof paper and packed into 20ft or 40ft containers, about 12,000–18,000 pieces per 20ft container depending on size. We also mark the outer cartons or bundles with your logo and shipping marks on request.

Q7: What is your delivery time?

Production takes about 10–15 days after deposit confirmation for standard specifications. Transit by sea to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa or Australia typically takes 25–40 days. We arrange all export documents including packing list, commercial invoice, bill of lading and, on request, a certificate of origin.

Q8: Can I get samples before ordering?

Yes. We provide small samples of T posts and Y posts for evaluation. Sample freight is usually paid by the buyer, and we deduct the sample cost from your first bulk order.
