How to Choose Barbed Wire: Wire Gauge, Coating and Barbs
Wire gauge and tensile strength
The most common specifications are 12.5 gauge (2.5mm) and 14 gauge (2.0mm) line wire. For permanent cattle fences choose 12.5 gauge with a tensile strength of 500-700 MPa; for temporary or light duty fences 14 gauge is lighter and cheaper. The barb wire gauge directly affects both price and service life, so match it to the animals and the fence length.
Hot-dip galvanizing vs electro galvanizing
Hot-dip galvanized barbed wire has a zinc coating of 40-80 g/m2 (or higher on request), giving 5-10 years of corrosion resistance in open air. Electro-galvanized wire carries a thinner coating and is suitable for indoor or short-term use. For export to humid regions or coastal farms, always choose hot-dip galvanized barbed wire. Standard barb spacing is 3-4 inches (76-100mm) with two or four points per barb. Four-point barbs give better control of cattle and stronger security per meter. Plan the line posts every 2.5-3 meters and use strainer posts at corners and ends. Use 4-6 strands for cattle and 6-8 strands for security fences.
